Houses

Inspired by the experience of being shut in at home during the lockdown, Houses uses a series of images of houses in precarious or seemingly dangerous situations to explore the feelings of tension, worry, and unstableness and their effects on family relationships in uncertain times. My initial sketches focused on older victorian-Esque style houses in shabby or unmaintained condition, in connection to the outward filtered appearance of households while struggling to not fall apart on the inside. The precarious situations, stilt legs, or single thread represent how close one can feel to falling apart, and the emotional weight of struggling in your relationships with the ones you love and deeply care about.

This concept evolved over its creation, to focus more on the individuals within rather than the house itself. The ghost-like forms staring out of the windows or walking the street continue to carry that emotional noise into the world beyond. The figure seated on a rope swing below an overgrown house is reminiscent of feelings of separation, detachment, and depersonalization in relation to individual identity and family.
