Wrap Yourself In This Place

The patchwork landscape of Alberta’s dirt roads, farmers’ fields, and rolling hills hold a feeling of nostalgia for me. In my mind, running barefoot through green pastures is tied to the sounds of my grandmother quilting. Quilts speak of comfort and security; a way of passing on memories and love through a physical object. They are a record of a transformative process; making ‘many’ into ‘one.’ The presence of a quilt carries these accumulated thoughts, hopes, and memories with it, and transforms a space to be more like ‘home.’
This work was made as part of a personal journey: one of reflection, the connection between generations, and grief. I seek to capture the stages of this journey in the labor of each piece of printed fabric and reflect on them in the meditative, repetitive stitching that holds them together. Through print and cloth, I transform the outside world and bring it inside, and through the creation process, I find ways of letting my internal thoughts out.
